Are You Ever Nervous about Talking with Your Doctor?
If you want to receive appropriate medical care and learn how to follow through on your doctor's recommendations, clear communications are essential. However, that's easier said than done.

The typical office visit is growing shorter. Your doctor will probably see you for 15 minutes or less, and electronic records are replacing some of the discussion that used to occur face to face. On top of that, there may be strong emotions and embarrassment that go along with any disturbing symptoms.

As a patient, you can learn to talk with your doctor more effectively. Try these suggestions for choosing a physician you'll feel comfortable with, and communicating with them.

Choosing Your Doctor

1. Check social media. Take a look at your doctor's Twitter feed or Facebook page for a preview that may suggest their personality and approach. Many health professionals use social media to educate their patients and answer common questions.

2. Evaluate online ratings. Internet services are now rating medical doctors as well as restaurants, and the criteria usually includes being friendly and easy to talk with. Just remember that these are opinions rather than facts. You may want to consult additional sources like referrals from friends and other health care providers.

3. Focus on the team. Pay attention to how your doctor interacts with colleagues as well as you. Some studies suggest that up to 80% of serious medical errors are caused by miscommunications between caregivers.

4. Take action. Most of all look for a physician who encourages your engagement. Do they speak with you respectfully and value your input?

Communicating with Your Doctor

1. Set priorities. Given how short doctor visits are today, ensure you squeeze in the main issues before you leave. Focus on your back pain instead of trying to deal with a whole laundry list of experiences.

2. Volunteer information. Your doctor may be as hesitant as you to bring up sensitive subjects like losing weight or quitting smoking. Share any details that could be relevant to receiving the treatment that you need.

3. Ask questions. More than 65% of medical schools now teach communications, but some practitioners still tend to speak in lectures. Asking questions creates a discussion and clarifies your concerns.

4. Sum it up. Restating what your doctor said is an effective way to show whether you really understand each other. Try giving a quick recap before you walk out the door.

5. Start a journal. Keeping a journal can help you to think straight when you're dealing with complicated medical information and strong emotions. Write down your symptoms and any events you want to talk about.

6. Take notes. Jot down what your doctor tells you. Use a notepad or your phone. Some practitioners may even let you record the sessions.

7. Accept uncertainty. Encourage your doctor to be candid by letting them know that you can handle the truth. You may be able to avoid unnecessary tests and prescriptions that are unlikely to provide clear cut answers or significant relief.

8. Discuss risks. Most procedures have risks as well as benefits. Be polite but firm about needing to hear the full picture.

9. Bring support. If you're nervous about going to the doctor's office alone, take along someone you trust like your spouse or a friend. Patient advocates can also facilitate discussions between you and your doctor. Your employer may have an employee assistance program or you can contact groups like the American Cancer Society.

Alternative Treatment Options For Allergies and Asthma
Do you suffer from allergies or asthma? It's a little-known fact that these two conditions are directly linked to each other. Asthma, which affects roughly one in 12 people according to the CDC, is characterized by spasms of the small airways and inflammation. Furthermore, about 90% of children under the age of 16 with asthma have allergies, while 70% of people between the ages of 16 and 30 have allergies, and 50% of adults over the age of 40 have allergies.

Unfortunately, most people who suffer from allergies and asthma simple mask their symptoms with drugs rather than seeking a treatment for the root cause. Both of these conditions involve an overreaction by the body's immune system to what it believes is a foreign invader. When you are exposed to an allergen (e.g. ragweed, pet dander, etc.), your immune system produces an abundance of inflammatory hormones, which subsequently cause the symptoms of allergies and asthma to manifest.

There are several alternative treatment options available for allergies and asthma. One of these options is choosing to make dietary and lifestyle changes. We live in an age in which far too many people choose to pick up convenient fast food as opposed to preparing and cooking fresh meals. There's nothing wrong with an occasional fast food burger, but basing the4 bulk of your diet around processed foods such as this will take a toll on your body. The lack of nutrients and increased intake of preservatives can disturb the immune system, causing greater sensitivity to allergens. A better choice is to consume a diet rich in lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

 Of course, herbal medicine is a time-tested alternative treatment for allergies and asthma. Some of the most popular herbs used to treat these conditions include stinging nettles, ginkgo biloba, green tea, and reishi, all of which contain heavy concentrations of antioxidants. These antioxidants are believed to fight harmful chemicals in the body known as free radicals, which if left unchecked, may irritate existing conditions like allergies and asthma.

How Can Chiropractic Help IBS
Chiropractors believe that there is a strong relationship between the intestines and the nervous system. Your nervous system must be able to send messages to the intestines without any interference in order for your bowels to work properly. The nervous system consists of the brain, the spinal cord, and the spinal nerves. Acupuncture and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Do you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? According to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), an estimated 25-45 million people in the United States have IBS (source). This all-too-common disease is characterized by chronic stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, excess gas, and irregular bowel movements. While there's no known cure for IBS, acupuncture may offer relief.

A recent study conducted by researchers in the UK found acupuncture to offer relief of IBS symptoms. For the study, researchers split 233 IBS patients into two groups, one of which received acupuncture plus the usual care, while the second group strictly received the usual care.

"Acupuncture for irritable bowel syndrome provided an additional benefit over usual care alone. The magnitude of the effect was sustained over the longer term. Acupuncture should be considered as a treatment option to be offered in primary care alongside other evidenced based treatments," wrote researchers in the study's conclusion.

So, how is this Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) able to treat IBS? TCM states that our bodies have an active energy force (Qi) which connects our organs and vital systems. Normally, Qi flows without obstruction, traveling along defined paths known as the meridian system. When a blockage occurs within the body, blood becomes stagnant and systems are vulnerable to disease and illness, which is where acupuncture comes into play.

Acupuncture involves the placement of thin needles in specific areas of the body, rightfully known as acupuncture points. While the exact number of acupuncture points has fluctuated over the years, TCM practitioners give the ballpark figure of roughly 2,000, all of which are spread across 12 major meridians and 8 secondary meridians. The primary function of acupuncture is to restore Qi by correcting blockages in the meridians. When Qi begins to flow, disease and health conditions such as IBS correct themselves.

Will acupuncture cure your IBS? There's not enough evidence to definitely say that it's a cure for IBS. However, numerous studies, including the one cited above, attest to the healing power of acupuncture. Spring and Traditional Chinese Medicine

With the official start of spring just around the corner, there's no better time than now to consider using popular forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As mother nature comes out of its state of dormancy, flowers will begin to blossom, trees will develop leaves, and the landscape will be replaced with flowing green grass. This massive change comes with some unwelcome side effects that TCM may prove useful in treating.

While cold and flu infection rates typically diminish by the start of spring, a new problem begins to emerge: allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), approximately 50 million people in the United States suffer from seasonal allergies (source). When exposed to pollen or other plant allergens, the individual may develop a runny nose, nasal congestion, eye redness, headache, sore throat, and other related symptoms.

Whether you suffer from mild, moderate or severe seasonal allergies, acupuncture can help. This centuries old TCM involves the placement of fine needles on specific areas throughout the body. Acupuncture is believed to restore the body's flow of energy (referred to as Qi) while stimulating the body's self-healing mechanism.

In Chinese astrology, spring falls under the Wood element, meaning this time of year is closely related to the gallbladder and liver. According to TCM, one of the liver's primary functions is to regulate Qi through the body. If Qi is blocked or restricted in any way, the individual will be susceptible to disease and illness.   • Consume sour food and drinks. According to TCM, sour flavors stimulate the liver's Qi.

There are over 2,000 acupuncture points spread across 20 meridians, but none hold as much weight for the spring season as Liver 3. Located between the first and second toes, Liver 3 (also known as the "springtime acupressure point") is an acupuncture point that is particularly beneficial for this time of year. It lives up to its namesake by channeling the liver energy; therefore, conventional wisdom should tell you to focus on it during this spring. If you plan on scheduling an acupuncture session, ask the physician if he or she can target Liver 3.

U.S. Adults Fail To Reach Recommended Amount Of Fruits And Vegetables

It may not come as a surprise that most adults don't eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. Across the nation, less than 15 percent are meeting the recommendations set by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC's new way of studying adults' intake of fruits and vegetables includes examining each state individually instead of getting the national average. Southern states are overwhelming falling short of their recommended daily values. In Tennessee, only seven percent of adults are eating the right amount of fruits, while in Mississippi only 5.5 percent are eating enough vegetables. California comes out on top with 17.7 percent of adults getting enough fruits and 13 percent eating enough vegetables. So how much should adults be really consuming? The Dietary Guidelines of America suggest inactive adults should consume 1.5 to 2 cups of fruits and two to three cups of vegetables each day. The more active a person is, the more they should be increasing these amounts.

Small Study Determines Aerobic Exercise Is Good For Asthma

With over 235 million people suffering from asthma across the globe, finding new treatment options is a priority in the global healthcare system. A recent, small study has determined that for people who suffer with moderate to severe asthma, aerobic exercise can make it easier for asthma sufferers to manage their asthma. Of the 43 patients who took part in this study, all of them were required to take yoga-breathing classes twice a week, and half were required to walk on a treadmill for 35 minutes twice a week. The study found that the participants that added walking into their routine, in addition to their regular medications they take to treat their asthma, saw a decrease in heightened sensitivity in the airway, as well as inflammation. Asthma sufferers should consult with their doctor prior to implementing an aerobic exercise regimen as that itself could actually lead to an asthma attack. While asthma attacks were not mentioned in the study, Dr. Simon Bacon, who was not a part of the study, says people with asthma may need to use their inhaler before or during their exercise.

Good News! Chances Are Your Workouts Earn You More Food Than You Thought

A small study posted in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants struggled to estimate how many calories they burned in a workout and how much they could eat to replenish those calories burned. 50 adults and 49 children were asked to choose the size of chocolate and how much of a sports drink they believed their one-hour workout would allow them to consume. The majority of participants selected a piece of chocolate and sports drink that was half the size of what their workout would allow them to eat or drink. The study's findings show that not only do people not understand how many calories their workout will burn, they also don't understand the number of calories in food or beverages simply by looking at the product. Senior author Craig Williams pointed out that in many cases, participants underestimated the number of calories in the chocolate and sports drink because they believed it was the correct answer, but they also would eat more than what they had indicated in the study.
